Preparing for the Interview (Speaking Part I)

IELTS, Speaking

“Do you feel ready for the interview?”. This is a question that most candidates answer “no” without even thinking about it. But is it really such a hard task? And how can one prepare for this part of the speaking test?

Firstly, you should keep in mind that the interview is a role-playing game. Consequently, you can prepare in the same way as actors do before improvisation: you don’t need to memorize the answers, but rather practice by maintaining a constant dialogue with yourself in English (you can also do it mentally if you find yourself in a place where you cannot speak loudly).

Another strategy is to make a list with possible interview questions and try answering them. Do not try to memorize the answers: the interview is made to evaluate your ability to speak spontaneously in English. In addition to that, you can practice with a partner whose role will be the interviewer and he/she can ask you the questions on the list.

Keep in mind that in the first part of the IELTS speaking test, the examiner is supposed to ask you general questions on familiar topics. You don’t need to worry about not having the answers because it will be more like casual conversation!

So, stop stressing yourself and practice more to succeed!
